Anishinaabemowin

Anishinaabe Language

“The Ojibwe language can explain why we must respect the earth and take responsibility for caring for the land, water, and its resources. It is the antidote to global climate change, environmental destruction, and unhealthy lifestyles. The Ojibwe language is where we turn for philosophy, history, science, medicines, stories, and spirituality. It is our university and the key to our cultural survival.”

The Ojibwe People’s Dictionary

As a source of knowledge and teachings of our lifeways, Anishinaabemowin, the language of the Ojibwe/Anishinaabe people, is foundational to everything we do.

Language shapes identity, instilling within each person a sense of belonging and teaches us our duty to land and each other. We believe language and learning are important to building a strong and welcoming spaces where Anishinaabe community members and allies can work together, engaging in land-based, community-led Anishinaabe lifeways, benefiting both our community and the ecological community.

Through a variety of initiatives and activities, Manidoo Ogitiagaan encourages learners of all levels to join us in awakening the sound and teachings of Anishinaabemowin for all to learn.
